As of Thursday, July 1 the rules written to implement SB 640 that specify what real estate licensees must do to renew their licenses and how continuing education providers become certified are effective.  Over a period of many months the Oregon Real Estate Agency, in collaboration with the industry, developed the rules that implement the provisions of SB 640 (2009 Oregon Laws, Chapter 502).  Beginning in January, real estate licensees must take continuing education courses from certified continuing education providers and maintain their own continuing education records. Licensees will also be required to complete a Real Estate Board-approved three-hour Law and Rule Update course each renewal period.  Continuing education providers will need to be certified by the Agency, develop learning objectives, ensure instructors meet specific qualifications, provide certificates to licensees and maintain records. Detailed information on all of the ins-and-outs of the new legislation is posted on the  Real Estate Agency’s website, http://www.oregon.gov/REA/index.shtml.
